Who Decides?

We say “LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE” whether the City of Bloomington should adopt Living Wage.  After all, its our taxes that are used to pay City workers and essentially they work for all of us and we all benefit from their labor.

Unfortunately the Bloomington City Council sees it another way.  A few years ago the community came within 1 vote of enacting Living Wage, but the outgoing Mayor broke the tie against the proposal.  Since that vote an overwhelming majority of Bloomington residents polled in favor of Living Wage, but the City Council fails to act.

Illinois State law allows citizens to initiate “non-binding referendum” questions to be included in election ballots.

Referendum Question

“Shall all employees and subcontracted workers of the City of Bloomington be paid a Living Wage of at least $9.81 per hour, with an annual cost of living adjustment?”
